Vans created an unprecedented art program in Los Angeles, bringing together six of the area's top emerging and recognized art talents by featuring their original work on a prominent billboard in the city.
For the duration of the project these six artists' work appeared for two months at a time and culminated with a group show at New Image art in Los Angeles presented by Vans. In addition, Vans made a $1,000 donation to the local charity of each artist's choice, on their behalf, giving back to the city that has given the company and these artists so much.
Design Week Portland asked us to design a poster and to fill in the blank for "design _______". We think design demands your attention and came up with this geometric fox to convey this idea. Gerst was also a speaker on opening day in Pioneer Square with a group of design professionals that read inspiring quotes and excerpts from books, magazines and essays. Gerst read a Buckminster Fuller excerpt from The Whole Earth Catalog, 1969.

Buckminster Fuller was a renowned 20th century inventor and visionary born in Milton, Massachusetts on July 12, 1895. Dedicating his life to making the world work for all of humanity, Fuller operated as a practical philosopher who demonstrated his ideas as inventions that he called "artifacts." Fuller did not limit himself to one field but worked as a 'comprehensive anticipatory design scientist' to solve global problems surrounding housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty. Throughout the course of his life Fuller held 28 patents, authored 28 books, received 47 honorary degrees. And while his most well know artifact, the geodesic dome, has been produced over 300,000 times worldwide, Fuller's true impact on the world today can be found in his continued influence upon generations of designers, architects, scientists and artists working to create a more sustainable planet.
Illustrator and author, Cole Gerst, brings Fuller's work into vivid, full-color view. Poet of Geometry includes hundreds of detailed illustrations spanning Fuller's entire life. This book not only shows how important Fuller was during his lifetime, but how his ideas are even more relevant today than ever.
Features collaborations with Charles Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Shoji Sadao and more. Also highlights relationships with Henry Ford, Albert Einstein and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Cole Gerst of Option-G was asked to produce a beer label for Gigantic Brewing Company for their October release of a beer called The Future Is Now. "Remember the stuff we were promised as kids? The flying cars, manned space stations and jet packs? The malty and caramelly flavors of an amber ale melded with the hoppy punch of an IPA? The future is not far off - and may be in your own hands."
